Recycling / Yardwaste & Composting

The 2007 Yard Waste and Leaf Pick Up Calendar is posted below.  This information can also be found in our Calendar.

Recycling

Recycling protects the environment by...

  • Conserving resources for our children's future
  • Preventing emissions of many greenhouse gases and water pollutants
  • Saving energy
  • Supplying valuable raw materials to industry
  • Creating jobs
  • Stimulating the development of greener technologies
  • Reducing the need for new landfills and incinerators

The program is one of 200 in the state and more than 9000 in the nation.

By the third quarter of 1999, 326,492 pounds of material was collected.

The City of Brighton recycling program runs year round. Recyclables are collected on the same day as refuse by a dedicated recycling truck.

Recycling collection is available for all residents receiving curbside refuse services.
Recyclables are not to be placed curbside more than one day before collection. Recycling should be placed curbside next to the cart and not inside of it to ensure proper collection.

Recyclable items include newsprint, envelopes without windows, clear glass, tin/aluminum, magazines, box board, number one and two plastics like milk, bottled water and detergent jugs.

Non-recyclable items include plastics marked numbers three through seven, colored glass, aerosol cans, rubber bands, laminated paper and magnetic materials.

There is no weight limit for recycling pick-up.

Yard waste & Composting

Just the Facts!

The program is one of 120 in the state.

Yard waste is environmentally friendly; when composted, it:

  • Provides nutrients to the soil,
  • Increases beneficial soil organisms (e.g., worms and centipedes),
  • Suppresses plant diseases reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides,
  • Protects soil from erosion,
  • Assists pollution remediation.

Yard waste is collected and shipped to Tuthill Farms Composting (located between Brighton and Whitmore Lake).

Curbside yard waste collection begins the first week in April, and runs every other week on your regular pickup day through the end of September.  Yard waste removal service is provided as part of customers' property taxes and is available to any customer that currently receives curbside waste removal services.

More than 67 percent of the municipal solid waste produced in the United States (including paper) is compostable material; however, certain organic materials should not be composted at home. Before you compost, be aware of what materials are appropriate.

Guidelines

  • Yard waste includes leaves, twigs and branches, grass clippings and other organic materials such as flowers, weeds and garden plants.
  • Yard waste must be packed in brown paper bags, or bundled together. There is a limit of 10 brown paper bags and/or four-foot bundles of brush, not to exceed 60 pounds per bundle.
  • Please place yard waste by the curb by 6:00 AM.
