NEW RESIDENTIAL TRASH SERVICE CONTRACT

City Council has approved a five-year contract with Waste Management for residential trash service.  Waste Management is our current trash service provider; however, there will be some changes with this new contract.  The most significant change will be that residents will now be provided with a 64-gallon recycle container, with a lid.  We understand it is most people’s desire to recycle more, so we are offering a larger container.  Additionally, the collection process will be done with automated trash trucks, so there is a specific placement location and orientation of the carts that will need to be followed when carts are placed at the curb for collection.  Because the collection is automated, only trash and recycling that fits in the containers will be picked up.

Carts will begin to be delivered during the last two weeks in June, 2019 and the new contract will be effective beginning July 1, 2019 and will result in a reduction in the monthly cost to residents from $16.01 per month to $15.80.  The cost will increase by 4% each July 1 beginning in 2020.
All of the other services currently offered as part of residential trash service will remain the same, including:

  • Service Days
  • Weekly Recycling Pick Up Service
  • One free bulk item pick up per year
  • Every other week yard waste pickup from April through September, and weekly pick up in October and November
  • The annual Spring Clean Up Event

We thank you for your patience during this transition, and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the DPW at 810.225.8001.  You can also click below to be directed to a flier containing answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

The City of Brighton recycling program runs year round. Recyclables are collected on the same day as refuse by a dedicated recycling truck.

Recycling collection is available for all residents receiving curbside refuse services. Recyclables are not to be placed curbside more than one day before collection. Recycling should be placed curbside next to the cart and not inside of it to ensure proper collection.

Recyclable items include newsprint, envelopes without windows, clear glass, tin/aluminum, magazines, box board, and all plastics.

Non-recyclable items include colored glass, aerosol cans, rubber bands, laminated paper and magnetic materials.

There is no weight limit for recycling pick-up.

Simple-Recycling-Logo.png

Simple Recycling provides collection and recycling of clothing and small household items at no cost to the resident or municipality. This textile recycling program is offered in addition to your residential waste and recycling services through Waste Management.  Simple Recycling collects materials on the same day as your general waste and recycling day and follows the same route as Waste Management.  All Brighton residents currently receiving municipal trash and recycling services will have access to Simple Recycling’s curbside pickup in front of their home.

Other options for participation are available for residents who do not receive municipal waste and recycling services.

1. Residents may pick up bags at City Hall or DPW and place out on the curb along the Waste Management route (bags will available for pick up at these locations beginning December 4, 2017).
2. Residents may contact Simple Recycling and have bags mailed directly to their home and then drop off on a curb along the Waste Management route.
3. Simple Recycling will work with Property Managers to supply bags and information to residents in multi-unit complexes/buildings.  Interested residents should contact Simple Recycling and consult with their Property Manager.
4. Simple Recycling will work with Property Managers to set up a bag/informational display in building lobbies so that residents can access bags and information about where to drop them off for pickup.  Interested residents should contact Simple Recycling and consult with their Property Manager.
